The tortuous terrain and being surrounded by mountains makes El Bierzo to enjoy a very peculiar microclimate, temperate and sub-humid it is determined by the association of the Atlantic and Mediterranean influence with a nicer temperature than the border areas, without extreme peaks or late frost.
The average temperature is around 12.4 ° C, and in summer it is around 22 ° C.
This makes the harvest to start earlier than other closer areas and red wines are softer and velvety, with a fine teardrop. The main native grape varietal is the Mencia.
