Our Roots, our wines from El Bierzo

We do not lose sight of the past in order to understand the present and build the future of our wines. Because Bodega del Abad is not just the name of a winery, it is a way of understanding and claiming the wine-making history of El Bierzo, a territory with a wine-making tradition deeply linked to the cultivation of the vine and the production of wines with identity.

Our winery is located in the heart of the Bierzo region, in the town of Carracedelo, one of the most renowned wine-growing areas in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. In this privileged environment, we produce wines from El Bierzo from Mencía and Godello, native varieties that define the character of some of the best wines from El Bierzo. All our wines are single-varietal and are protected by the Bierzo Designation of Origin, faithfully reflecting the origin, the landscape and the essence of our land.

Carracedo

This wine is the benchmark of Bodega del Abad and one of the best expressions of the Mencía from El Bierzo. Its name pays tribute to the Monastery of Carracedo, a historical symbol of the territory and located very close to the winery, reflecting the deep link between wine, landscape and Bierzo tradition.

Made from the blend of three unique plots, this wine is born from old Mencía vines in goblet form, more than 85 years old, settled on soils of great singularity. The plots are located in Valtuille de Arriba, at 650 meters of altitude, a privileged enclave that brings freshness, complexity and character to one of the most representative wines of El Bierzo from the winery.

Located in an emblematic and world-famous wine region

At Bodega del Abad we have 25 hectares of our own Mencía and Godello vineyards, located in some of the most privileged areas for the production of wines from El Bierzo. Our vineyards are located in the upper part of Valtuille de Arriba and Villafranca del Bierzo, enclaves recognized for their wine-growing quality and their capacity to give wines with character and personality.

The vines grow on steep slopes, at an altitude that favors the freshness and balanced ripening of the grape. The soils, formed by a mixture of fine elements, quartzites and slates, bring complexity, minerality and structure to our wines from El Bierzo, faithfully reflecting the landscape and the origin of each plot.

Our commitment is to produce wines from El Bierzo with identity, capable of transmitting the character of the terroir and the philosophy of Bodega del Abad in each glass

Responsible Viticulture

Respect for the vineyard

Responsible viticulture is one of the fundamental pillars in the production of Bodega del Abad’s wines from El Bierzo. We take care of each stage of the work in the vineyard, from the cultural practices of the vine to pruning and yield control, with the aim of guaranteeing optimal ripening of the grape and the highest quality in each harvest.

We respect the diversity and heterogeneity of the soils of El Bierzo, working each plot and each vine individually. This approach allows us to preserve the essence of the terroir, ensuring that our Mencía and Godello grapes faithfully express the identity of their origin and the unique character of a wine-growing territory marked by history and tradition.
