MONASTERY OF SANTA MARÍA DE CARRACEDO
A Benedictine monastery founded by Bermudo II “the Gouty” in the year 990. It had great political, religious and economic power, holding jurisdiction over other monasteries in Galicia, Asturias and León. Restored in the twelfth century, it contains a whole series of architectural styles: Transition Romanesque in the early church of 1138, Gothic in the “Queen’s Balcony”, and Renaissance in the cloister, the refectory and the sacristy. It is located in Carracedo del Monasterio, municipality of Carracedelo, in the district of El Bierzo, just a stone’s throw from our winery.
