EL MONASTERIO DE CARRACEDO, PRESENTE EN LOS VINOS DE BODEGA DEL ABAD

In today’s post we’d like to speak of one of the details that gives personality to our wines. On this occasion we are not referring to the quality of the mencía or godello grapes with which we make our single-varietal beverages. Nor to their structure or elegance on the palate. In fact we are not speaking of wine-tasting at all. We are speaking of the labels on many of our bottles, and specifically of a characteristic detail constituting a tribute to our local heritage. If you haven’t already noticed out of curiosity, did you know that the Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo is present in the wines of Bodega del Abad?

As those of you who have visited our winery in the wine-tourism experiences we offer will know, a stone’s throw from Bodega del Abad, at Carracedo del Monasterio (municipality of Carracedelo) is the Monastery of Santa María de Carracedo. It was built in 990, and then restored in the 12th century. As well as being a spectacular site that is highly recommendable for anyone visiting these parts, it is of particular interest for its museum on the origins and history of the monastery.

And by now you may be asking: but where does this monastery appear on your labels? Well, many of these include a drawing of a circular form with crosses inside, and this is actually a depiction of a rose window to be seen at the monastery. For at Bodega del Abad we seek thereby to pay tribute to El Bierzo and in particular to our local heritage.

One more secret you now know about our wines!
